Berberine for UTI: What the Reviews Cover and the Small Line in FemiPro

Quick answer

Berberine for UTI is not backed by the reviews in our files: they cover blood sugar, lipids and gut effects, not urinary infections. FemiPro lists granular berberine hydrochloride extract 8% as its fourth herbal line, at most 87.5 mg, and at most 7 mg of berberine if 8% means berberine.

The evidence01

Is berberine proven for urinary tract infections?

No, berberine is not proven for urinary tract infections in the sources we hold. An umbrella review of 11 meta-analyses found effects on blood glucose, insulin resistance, blood lipids, body composition and inflammatory markers, among others (Berberine umbrella review, 2023).

The review does not cover bladder or urinary outcomes. Its authors call berberine safe but say the quality of the meta-analyses needs to improve and the effects should be confirmed in better trials. Common side effects were constipation and diarrhea.

Metabolic results do not carry over to a different organ by default. A herb can help one thing and do nothing for another.

So the claim that a berberine line helps a urinary infection rests on a leap from other results. A reader should not take that leap for a person.

The infection02

What treats a UTI if berberine does not?

A urinary tract infection is treated with antibiotics prescribed by a clinician. CDC lists burning on urination, frequent urination, urgency, bloody urine and lower belly pressure as symptoms, and says to see a health care professional for any of them (CDC, UTI basics).

Fever, chills, back or side pain, and nausea or vomiting suggest a kidney infection, which is more serious. Do not wait for a supplement in that case.

If you get repeat infections, there are options with better support. The 2025 AUA guideline says clinicians should offer cranberry to women with recurrent infections, and vaginal estrogen to peri- and postmenopausal women without a reason to avoid it (AUA/CUA/SUFU, Recurrent uncomplicated UTI guideline 2025). Berberine is not on that list.

FemiPro's label names its first blend "UTI Herbal Blend". The name is a label choice. The capsule is a dietary supplement, and no supplement is a treatment for an infection or a replacement for antibiotics.

The amount03

How much berberine could a FemiPro capsule hold?

A FemiPro capsule holds at most 87.5 mg of berberine hydrochloride extract, and at most 7 mg of berberine if the label's "8%" means 8% berberine. The label does not define the percentage.

The ceiling is 350 mg divided by 4, since berberine is the fourth of four herbal lines listed by weight (21 CFR 101.36, supplement labeling). Eight percent of 87.5 mg is 7 mg. The real figure could be lower still, because the first three lines could take most of the blend.

Compare that with LiverTox, which cites a usual herbal dose of 250 to 500 mg, two or three times a day (LiverTox, Berberine). One capsule's ceiling is far below it.

  • Berberine

    Far below the usual dose
    1 capsule, label-order ceiling (line 4 of 4)88 mg
Berberine in that ceiling if '8%' means 8% berberine7 mg
Usual herbal dose a day (250-500 mg, two or three times)500-1,500 mg

Not printed: line 4 of 4 in a 350 mg blend. The label does not explain the '8%', and berberine was studied for blood sugar, not the bladder. (LiverTox, Berberine)

  • Cranberry extract and its PACs

No set dose to compare with
    1 capsule, label-order ceiling (line 2 of 4)175 mg
PACs in that ceiling at 30%52 mg
No single trial dose: the trials used many juices, tablets and capsulesnone

Not printed: line 2 of 4 in a 350 mg blend, standardized to 30% proanthocyanidins (PACs). (Cochrane 2023, cranberries for preventing UTIs)

  • Mimosa pudica seed extract

    Nothing to compare with
    1 capsule, label-order ceiling (line 1 of 4)350 mg
No human dose has been studiednone

Not printed: line 1 of 4, so it could be most of the 350 mg blend. (Muhammad 2016, Mimosa pudica review)

  • Bearberry leaf

A daily capsule runs past the one-week limit
    1 capsule, label-order ceiling (line 3 of 4)117 mg
EU traditional use: short courses, no longer than one weeknone

Not printed: line 3 of 4 in a 350 mg blend. (EMA/HMPC, Uvae ursi folium (bearberry leaf))

Pink bars: the most one capsule can hold by label order. Plum bars: a figure worked out from that ceiling. Sage bars: a usual or studied daily amount, where one exists. The label prints only the two blend totals, so real amounts may be far lower than any ceiling (21 CFR 101.36, supplement labeling).

Safety04

Should you worry about berberine in a small capsule line?

A small berberine line is a modest concern, not a zero one, because berberine can change how the body handles some medicines. A 2026 narrative review describes interaction liability and says to manage berberine as an active agent in people on many drugs (Berberine drug interactions review, 2026). The next post, berberine drug interactions, goes through it.

NCCIH says goldenseal, which contains berberine, should not be used in pregnancy or breastfeeding, because the berberine can be harmful to newborns (NCCIH, Goldenseal (berberine source)). That source is about goldenseal, so treat it as a caution. The FemiPro label asks pregnant or nursing mothers to consult a physician.

Keep taking prescribed medicine, and tell your clinician about this capsule. You can read the whole ingredient file on the FemiPro berberine page.

FAQ05

Berberine and UTI questions, answered

Does berberine kill bacteria in the bladder?

None of the sources we hold show that. The umbrella review lists metabolic and gut outcomes and no urinary ones. Do not rely on berberine to clear an infection that needs antibiotics.

Can berberine stand in for a prescription when I have UTI symptoms?

No source here supports it. CDC says a clinician prescribes the antibiotics for an infection. If you have symptoms, call a clinician first rather than starting a supplement on your own.

Is the 8% on the FemiPro berberine line berberine?

The label does not say. It reads granular berberine hydrochloride extract 8% (bark/root), so the 8% could describe berberine, in which case the ceiling is 7 mg a capsule.
